Motivation and Artistry
I first met Jean Pierre when I was fifteen years old, having learned guitar for two years, and in desperate need for renewed motivation to improve both my knowledge and technique concerning guitar playing as well as the application of these skills in regard to songwriting.

This motivation was obtained after a mere two minutes of listening to Jean Pierre’s playing and taking in the different aspects of guitar playing he has mastered over the years.
The next couple of years involved Jean Pierre guiding me and pushing me to abandon my over reliance on guitar norms such as the pentatonic scale and power chords. I was (and still am!) in awe of his guitar playing and this, coupled with his mentoring, instilled a great sense of belief in me, making me try to learn as much as I could while I was with him. Being primarily an instrumentalist, Jean Pierre’s skills encompass being as expressive as possible through the guitar, by using original and unpredictable chords and scales, meaning he has an incredible all-round knowledge of the guitar in its broadest aspect. Consequently, one of the most important skills he passed on to me was the patience to appreciate the diversity of music, helping me ‘escape’ from listening exclusively 70’s and 80’s rock and heavy metal. This had a direct effect on my songwriting, allowing me to see that there is much more to writing a song then chucking in a couple of distorted riffs and a 5 minute long solo.
Jean Pierre helped me greatly in my understanding of music. When he first started helping me with music thoery, I was surprised when he told me he would not teach me how to read traditional manuscript. He instead focused all his attention on helping me understand as fully as possible, aspects of musical theory, often explaining how it is useless knowing how to read music if you cannot apply it. This unconventional way of teaching paid off greatly, allowing me to learn as much as possible in the time I attended his lessons.
With his great understanding of guitar playing, solid teaching principles (such as only engaging in one-on-one lessons with students), and being such an easy-going, friendly person, Jean Pierre makes a fine teacher from whom anyone (be he/she a beginner or expert) can learn a great deal from. There is no doubt I would be half the guitarist I am today without his tuition, and for that I will always be grateful.
Teacher aside, he is definitely one of Malta’s leading guitarists (if not, Malta’s leading guitarist), whose flawless technique and beautiful melodies are always a pleasure to listen to. I will always hold him in the highest regard.
